Measuring Which Trash Can Cleaning Sign-Ups Stick
Counting sign-ups feels good. A weekend with twenty new customers looks like a win. But if fifteen of them cancel after one cleaning, it was not much of a weekend. The number that actually matters is how many sign-ups are still paying a few months later, and where those customers came from.
Sign-Ups Are Not Customers Yet
The first month, covered in Keeping New Bin Cleaning Sign-Ups Through the First Month, is where a lot of sign-ups are won or lost. Measuring which ones stick tells you two things: which marketing brings in lasting customers, and which parts of your booking or first visit need work.
You do not need anything complicated. A few consistent tags and a look back every few months will tell you most of what you need.
Tag at the Moment of Conversion
The easiest time to record where a customer came from is when you convert the sign-up in Form Responses. You know it then; three months later you will not. TrashCanBossPro lets you add tags and custom fields to clients. Decide on a short list and use it every time.
Source: door hanger, flyer, yard sign, Facebook group, referral, review or search, phone call, trailer or curbside. Add the neighborhood for door hangers and Facebook groups.
Plan: Monthly, Every-Other-Week, Weekly or One-time.
Promotion: "Spring promo 2026" or "Summer half-off," if they came in on an offer.
Start date: a custom field, so you can tell how long they have been with you.
Keep the list short. Ten sources that everyone uses the same way beat fifty that nobody can remember.
How to Learn the Source
Customers do not always say where they heard about you. A few ways to find out:
- An optional "How did you hear about us?" on the sign-up form.
- A quick question in the welcome text: "Mind telling us how you found us?"
- Timing: a cluster of sign-ups from one street the day after door hangers went out is a good clue.
- Referrals from the customer app tell you directly.
If you truly do not know, tag it "Unknown." A guess is worse than an honest blank.
Check Back Every Few Months
Pick a regular time, maybe once a quarter, to look back. Use the client list and reports, filtered by your tags, and answer a few simple questions:
- Of the customers from each source, how many are still active?
- Which plans do people stay on longest?
- Did the spring promotion bring in customers who stayed, or only bargain hunters?
- Which neighborhoods hold customers best?
Write the answers down in a simple notebook or spreadsheet, season by season. After a year you have a clear picture of what works for your business in your area, which matters more than any general advice.
What the Numbers Might Tell You
Every area is different, so trust your own results over anyone else's. But here are the kinds of things owners often discover:
- A source that brings many sign-ups but few lasting customers, which might mean the offer attracted people who only wanted one clean.
- A neighborhood where nearly every sign-up stays, which is a strong case for more door hangers on those streets.
- Referrals that stick well, which might justify a bigger thank-you for referring customers.
- One-time customers who rarely convert unless you follow up, which tells you to make that follow-up a habit.
Use what you find to shift your time and money. Spend more where customers last; spend less where they churn. If a neighborhood is a winner, the approach in Door Hangers That Send Neighbors to Your Bin Cleaning Sign-Up Form is a cheap way to add more of it.
Look at Cancellations Too
When a customer cancels, ask why and note it, with a tag or in the notes. "Moving," "Too expensive," "Missed cleanings," "Did not see the difference." Some reasons you cannot control. Others point to a problem: if "missed cleanings" shows up a lot, look at routes and trash days before you spend another dollar on marketing.
Keep It Simple
The goal is not perfect data. It is a better guess than you had last season. A few tags, applied every time, and a short look back each quarter are enough to make smarter decisions about where your next door hanger batch goes.
The Short Version
Tag every new client by source, plan and promotion when you convert them, check back every few months, and spend more on the sources whose customers stay. For the rest of the booking tools, visit the TrashCanBossPro bin cleaning booking software page.
