Building HOA Bin Cleaning Routes Around the Neighborhood's Trash Day

An HOA that pays for every home's cans is the most route-friendly account in bin cleaning. Dozens or hundreds of homes, packed close together, usually on one trash day. Get the timing right and you can clean a whole neighborhood in a day with almost no drive time. Get it wrong and you are washing full cans or chasing cans that went back in the garage.

Why Timing Decides Renewals

The renewal habits in Keeping HOA and Commercial Bin Cleaning Accounts Renewing Year After Year all start with showing up on the right day. For an HOA, the right day is set by the city trash truck, not by you.

Clean Right After Pickup

The rule is simple: clean the cans right after the city empties them. On pickup day afternoon, or the morning after, the cans are empty and often still at the curb. Clean a full can and you are washing trash. Wait two days and half the cans are back in garages and side yards.

Every address in TrashCanBossPro stores its city trash pickup day, and it shows on the office lists and the crew's phone as part of the can line, like "2 trash · 1 recycling · Trash day Tue." When you build routes, the trash day tells you which day each home belongs on.

One Big Day

Most neighborhoods have one trash day. That makes HOA routing straightforward: the whole account goes on the day after pickup, or on pickup day afternoon if you can start behind the trash truck.

On the dispatch board, put the HOA's due cleanings on one trailer for that day. Use auto-route, Closest First or Furthest First from the shop, to set a sensible order. Then look at the order and adjust by hand if a street layout or a one-way road makes a different sequence better. The crew's phone shows the same order.

For big neighborhoods, split the HOA across two trailers by section, or across two days if the second day is still before most residents roll cans back.

When Trash Days Are Split

Some larger HOAs have two trash days: the north half on Monday, the south half on Thursday. Because each address keeps its own trash day, the split takes care of itself. Monday-pickup homes go on Tuesday's route, Thursday-pickup homes go on Friday's. Check the address list when you set up the account, and confirm with the city schedule if the HOA is not sure.

Holiday weeks shift city pickup. Watch for those and move the HOA day to match. A quick text to the HOA manager the week before ("pickup moves to Wednesday, so we'll clean Thursday") keeps everyone on the same page.

Let the Waiting List Drive It

A monthly HOA plan at 28 minimum days between visits brings every home due at once. On the Waiting List map, the whole neighborhood turns from not due yet to due now together. That is your signal to put it on the next day after pickup.

If a few homes were skipped last time and cleaned later, they may come due on a slightly different schedule. That is fine; route them with the rest of the neighborhood the next time you are there.

Keeping Cans at the Curb

The best route in the world does not help if cans are in the garage. Work with the HOA on resident notice. Many boards announce cleaning day in a newsletter or email blast. The account contacts get automatic night-before reminders by text and email ("we clean tomorrow, leave the cans out").

Can location notes cover homes where cans live behind a gate or along the side of the house, if the HOA has agreed the crew can go get them. Write that permission down on the account so nobody walks into a back yard that is off-limits.

Fitting Other Work Around the HOA

An HOA day is usually a full day for one trailer. Common-area pads and pool cans can be cleaned that same day. Residential subscription customers nearby can ride along at the start or end. Commercial stops with time windows, like a restaurant that wants you before 10am, are better on a different trailer. More on that in Which Trailer Gets the Commercial Stops?
