Cleaning Right Behind the Garbage Truck: How Trash Day Shapes the Tech's List
Every other home service can pick any day that suits the route. Bin cleaning cannot. The cans have to be empty, and the easiest time to find them empty and at the curb is the afternoon after the city truck comes through. That one fact shapes the whole bin cleaning schedule, and it should shape the list on every tech's phone.
A Good Finish Starts With Good Timing
The finish described in Leaving Lids Open to Dry: Finishing Every Bin Cleaning Stop the Same Way only happens if the tech gets to clean the cans at all. Timing the visit to trash day is what makes that possible.
Show up the day before trash day and the cans are full. Show up two days after and many are back in garages. Show up the afternoon of pickup and most are empty, at the curb and ready.
Trash Day Lives on the Address
In TrashCanBossPro, every address stores its city trash pickup day. It shows under the address on the office lists and on the tech's stop card, next to the can counts: “2 trash · 1 recycling · Trash day Tue.”
Collect it at sign-up. Most customers know their pickup day without thinking. Ask on the sign-up form and it flows into the address when the sign-up is converted into a client. If you imported a customer list, fill in trash day before building your first routes. It is the single most useful field for planning.
Building Routes Around Trash Day
With trash day on every address, building a route is straightforward:
- Look at what is due. The Waiting List shows every cleaning that has come due, colored by status.
- Pick the trash day. For Tuesday, focus on addresses whose trash day is Tuesday.
- Assign to trailers. Put those stops on Tuesday for the trailer or trailers working that side of town. Filter the dispatch board by trailer to check each one.
- Auto-route. Closest First or Furthest First from the shop puts them in a sensible order. Adjust by hand where you know better.
The tech's phone shows that order. The tech does not need to know anything about trash days to work the list. The thinking was done in the office. The stop-by-stop side is in The Bin Cleaning Tech's Day in Route Order: Working the Stop List Top to Bottom.
Start After the Truck Passes
City garbage trucks run on their own schedule, and it is not always the same every week. A neighborhood might be emptied by 9am one week and 1pm the next. Starting a trash-day route too early means full cans and skips.
Many bin cleaners start their trash-day neighborhoods late morning or early afternoon, and fill the early hours with stops that do not depend on pickup timing, such as commercial pads, customers who keep cans behind a gate, or neighborhoods whose trash day was the day before. A tech who reaches a street where the truck has not come yet can tell the office, and the office can move those stops later on the route.
Matching Plans to Trash Days
Recurring plans come due by minimum days between visits: 7 for weekly, 14 for every other week, 28 for monthly. Because trash day repeats weekly, those intervals line up neatly. A monthly customer cleaned on a Tuesday trash day will come due again about four weeks later, on another Tuesday.
That keeps each neighborhood landing on the same day of the week, month after month. Customers get used to it. “They clean my cans the afternoon of trash day” is easy to remember, and it means they leave the cans out.
When a Trash Day Changes
Cities change pickup days. Holidays push pickup back a day. When the tech sees full cans on a whole street on the day the card says trash day, that is a clue. A note on the skip like “whole street still full, maybe holiday schedule” helps the office figure it out.
For a permanent change, update trash day on each affected address. Every future stop card shows the new day, and the next round of routes follows it. For holiday weeks, the office can simply move those stops back a day on the dispatch board.
Reminders Tie It Together
Automated reminders like “we clean tomorrow, leave the cans out” go out by text and email. For bin cleaning, the night-before reminder usually lands the evening before trash day, which is exactly when customers are rolling their cans to the curb anyway. The message reminds them to leave the cans there after pickup.
Follow the Garbage Truck
Trash day is the backbone of a bin cleaning schedule. Store it on every address, build routes around it, start after the truck passes and let the tech's list follow. For more on the tech app, go back to the TrashCanBossPro trash can cleaning app page.
