The Tech's Phone in Route Order: Working a Bin Cleaning Route Stop by Stop
All the planning in the office comes down to one thing: a tech in a truck, pulling a trailer, working down a list. The better that list is, the faster the day goes. Here is what a route day looks like from the tech's side in TrashCanBossPro.
Before the First Stop
Once the paper is gone, as covered in Moving Off Paper Route Sheets: Running Bin Cleaning Routes From the Phone, the route lives on the phone. The tech opens the tech app in the browser on an iPhone or Android phone, or from the home screen if it is installed. They log in with the company login and their personal PIN, so every job, photo and clock-in is tied to the right person.
They clock in on the time clock and see the day's stops in the order dispatch set on the board. Nobody needs to explain the route in the morning. It is right there.
Reading the Card
Each stop is a card. At a glance the tech sees:
- The address, with a navigation button
- The cans: "2 trash · 1 recycling · Trash day Tue"
- The can location notes: left side of garage, behind gate, gate code
- Any job notes, such as a one-time request from the customer
The can count matters more than it looks. A tech who knows there are three cans at this stop does not leave with two cleaned. The trash day is a quick sanity check: if the card says Tuesday and it is Tuesday, the cans should be empty.
Getting There
The navigation button opens directions to the address. Nobody types addresses in a moving truck. In a dense subdivision, the next stop might be three houses away and the tech will just walk the hose over. On a spread-out route, the button saves a few minutes of fumbling at every stop.
The on-the-way text goes out to the customer automatically as the tech heads their way, and the arrived text when the tech gets there, for customers who have those alerts on.
At the Curb
The tech taps Start. That tells the office the stop is underway, and customers watching the live map see the crew at their stop. Then the work: before photo, wash, sanitize, after photo, cans set back where they belong.
The photos stay with the job. When a customer asks whether the recycling can was done, the office can look. Before and after photos also make good material for your own marketing, with the customer's permission.
Complete or Skip
When the stop is done, the tech taps Complete. The office sees it done with photos attached. The invoice is created and a card on file can be charged. For a recurring plan, the next cleaning will come due on the Waiting List after the plan's minimum days.
If the stop cannot be done, the tech taps Skip and writes why: cans full, cans put away, gate locked, customer asked to skip. A photo of the full can or the empty curb backs it up. The office sees the skip and reason right away and can follow up. More on that in Start, Skip, Complete: Closing Out Every Stop on a Bin Cleaning Route.
When the Route Changes Mid-Day
Routes change. A same-day add-on comes in, a stop gets pulled, two stops swap. When dispatch changes the order on the board, the list on the phone follows. The tech finishes the current stop, looks at the next card and keeps going. A quick text from the office ("added one on Maple between 9 and 10") is still good practice.
If the tech needs to move something, like pushing a street with full cans to later, a text or call to the office gets it moved on the board, and the phone follows.
End of the Day
When the last card is complete, the tech clocks out on the same phone. The office has every completed stop, every skip with its reason, every photo and the hours worked. There is no route sheet to turn in and nothing to type up.
The next morning, a new list is waiting, built from whatever came due on the Waiting List and the neighborhoods whose trash day it is.
The Short Version
Log in with the company login and PIN, clock in, work the cards top to bottom, use the navigation button, read the cans and notes, Start, photos, Complete or Skip with a reason, clock out. For the office side of the same route, return to the TrashCanBossPro bin cleaning route software page.
